HK Seals Off Apartment Building as Virus Spreads
Mon March 31, 2003 08:21 AM ET

By Tan Ee Lyn and Vicki Kwong

HONG KONG (Reuters) - More than 100 people in one Hong Kong apartment block were suspected to have been infected by a deadly pneumonia virus, officials said on Monday, triggering fears that the killer disease was being spread through air or water.

At least two more people died from the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong during the day, taking the death toll in the city to 15 and to 61 worldwide.

A total of 213 people living in the Amoy Gardens housing estate were confirmed or suspected to be infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), of whom 107 are from Block E of the complex, Health Secretary Yeoh Eng-kiong told a news conference.

Authorities have quarantined more than 200 other residents in Block E in an effort to contain the virus, which has infected almost 1,700 people across the world, mostly in Asia.

Dozens of health workers in full surgical gear stood guard at the entrance of the apartment block to stop any residents from leaving as policemen in masks cordoned off the area.

But residents said many families had already fled.

The number of those infected in Amoy Gardens, in the heart of the teeming Kowloon district, is almost one-third of the total number in Hong Kong, a city of seven million people.

Two elderly men died of the disease on Monday, bringing the death toll in the city to 15.

A NIGHTMARE

Amoy Gardens is in a maze of crowded housing estates and smoke-spewing industrial buildings in one of the most densely-populated areas in the world.

Proliferation of the virus in such an environment is certain to create havoc and put immense pressure on public hospitals, which are already stretched and barely able to cope.

"We are now examining all possible angles, to see if it is airborne or in the (building's) water mains," a government spokeswoman said of the virus.

Health Minister Yeoh said: "We are now detecting the virus in the fecal material (from Amoy Gardens patients). So that would be one possible potential cause of spread to large populations under unusual circumstances."

"There was a suggestion that the sewage system was leaking...we are investigating."

Experts have previously said the virus was carried by droplets from sneezing or coughing, but the high number of cases at Amoy Gardens has raised fears the virus could be water or airborne.

"Up till today, it is spread through droplets. But no one can rule out that it could be airborne, because viruses change all the time," Yeoh said.

DISRUPTIONS

Fearful of the disease, some companies have ordered staff to work from homes while others have begun to organize backup, skeletal teams in case their workers get infected.

Hong Kong and Singapore have closed schools in a bid to contain the disease and quarantined those exposed. Besides these two cities, deaths have also been reported from Vietnam, Canada and from China, where the disease originated in November.

A doctor from the World Health Organization, who was infected in Vietnam after he had identified the virus, died in a Bangkok hospital at the weekend.

The disease has triggered tighter screenings at many airports and a growing number of countries have advised citizens against unnecessary travel to the worst-affected areas.

In Singapore, nurses have been deployed at the airport to check incoming passengers.

Apart from scaring away tourists, the epidemic has disrupted business in Hong Kong. A growing list of shops, banks and offices have shut after employees were found infected.

Some expatriates have departed quietly, taking their families with them on home leave.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned on Saturday that the virus may wreak more havoc.

"The potential for infecting larger numbers of people is great," said its director Julie Gerberding. "We may be in the early stages of what could be a larger problem."

Cases have also surfaced in the United States, Germany, Britain, France, Japan, Ireland, Italy and Taiwan.

Almost 1,700 people have been infected worldwide, but some have since recovered. About four percent of the people who catch it die from the disease.

Lie action?

SOUTHERN IRAQ (Reuters) - They don't think much of the view, they miss their families and they worry about getting killed.

A week after invading Iraq, some U.S. troops are wondering what happened to their hopes of a three-day race to Baghdad, waved on by the white flags of surrendering enemy soldiers.

"I feel like the longer I'm out here, the less are my chances of staying alive," said U.S. Marine Lance-Corporal Michael Sanchez, staring with sullen eyes at a vista of withered roadside shrubs.

"Right here the odds are against us, we don't know the terrain, we don't know the people, we don't know what they got coming for us," he said, his 21-year-old face a picture of resentment.

Like his comrades, Sanchez had expected a kind of "Baghdad run," surging unopposed to the capital in the wake of a massive bombing campaign that would have cracked Iraqi resolve.

Instead, members of his convoy have been shot at by snipers, snarled up in a sandstorm, and stuck for days in a patch of wilderness populated chiefly by irritating gnats

But all of them know first hand what senior U.S. officers are only now beginning to admit in public -- Iraqi resistance is a lot tougher than they were expecting.

On this road leading to the southern town of Nassiriya, there are no garlands offered by grateful young women to the "liberators" -- only a threat of ambush, mines and booby traps.

"I hate this place," shouted one Marine from a trench he had dug by the road.

(...)

Another officer of 535 company, Lieutenant Mark Pietrak, said: "This is going to take longer than expected, especially if we don't get on top of these pockets of resistance. It takes time to neutralize guerrilla opposition."

"U.S. Marines finally crossed the Euphrates and the Saddam Canal in Nassiriya, but soon ran into more trouble.
We're getting ambushed up there right now," said Lew Craparotta, commander of the Third Battalion, First Marine Infantry regiment, on the road north of Nassiriya."

U.N. Official: Fake Iraq Nuke Papers Were Crude
Tue March 25, 2003 09:39 AM ET
By Louis Charbonneau

VIENNA (Reuters) - A few hours and a simple internet search was all it took for U.N. inspectors to realize documents backing U.S. and British claims that Iraq had revived its nuclear program were crude fakes, a U.N. official said.

Speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, a senior official from the U.N. nuclear agency who saw the documents offered as evidence that Iraq tried to buy 500 tons of uranium from Niger, described one as so badly forged his "jaw dropped."

"When (U.N. experts) started to look at them, after a few hours of going at it with a critical eye things started to pop out," the official said, adding a more thorough investigation used up "resources, time and energy we could have devoted elsewhere."

The United States first made the allegation that Iraq had revived its nuclear program last fall when the CIA warned that Baghdad "could make a nuclear weapon within a year" if it acquired uranium. President Bush found the proof credible enough to add it to his State of the Union speech in January.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) official said the charge Iraq sought the uranium was to be the "stake in the heart" of Baghdad and "would have been as close to a smoking gun as you could get" because Iraq could only want it for weapons.

OBVIOUS FAKES

Once the IAEA got the documents -- which took months -- French nuclear scientist Jacques Bautes, head of the U.N. Iraq Nuclear Verification office, quickly saw they were fakes.

Two documents were particularly bad. The first was a letter from the president of Niger which referred to his authority under the 1965 constitution. That constitution has been defunct for nearly four years, the official said.

There were other problems with the letter, including an unsuccessful forgery of the president's signature.

"It doesn't even look close to the signature of the president. I'm not a (handwriting) expert but when I looked at it my jaw dropped," the official said.

Another letter about uranium dated October 2000 purportedly came from Niger's foreign minister and was signed by a Mr. Alle Elhadj Habibou, who has not been foreign minister since 1989.

To make matters worse, the letterhead was out of date and referred to Niger's "Supreme Military Council" from the pre-1999 era -- which would be like calling Russia the Soviet Union.

After determining the documents were fakes, the IAEA had a group of international forensics experts -- including people from the U.S and Britain -- verify their findings. The panel unanimously agreed with the IAEA.

"We don't know who did it," the official said, adding that it would be easy to come up with a long list of groups and states which would like to malign the present Iraqi regime.

The IAEA asked the U.S. and Britain if they had any other evidence backing the claim that Iraq tried to buy uranium. The answer was no.

IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei informed the U.N. Security Council in early March that the Niger proof was fake and that three months with 218 inspections at 141 sites had produced "no evidence or plausible indication" Iraq had a nuclear program.

But last week Vice President Dick Cheney repeated the U.S. position and said that ElBaradei was wrong about Iraq.

"We know (Iraqi President Saddam Hussein) has been absolutely devoted to trying to acquire nuclear weapons, and we believe he has in fact reconstituted nuclear weapons," he said.

"U.S. and British aircraft bombed a Syrian civilian bus carrying Syrian workers working in Iraq on their way to Syria. This criminal act resulted in the death of five of the Syrian citizens and the injury of others," an official statement said.
An earlier report from the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said a U.S. plane had fired a missile at a bus carrying 37 Syrians, killing five and wounding at least 10.

SANA said the incident occurred on Sunday morning in Iraq's al-Rutbeh area, some 160 km (100 miles) from the Syrian border."

Sinfest - Life

Through the ages man has lamented the ephemeral nature of life. Everything dies, nothing lasts, all is subject to the ravaging force of Time. So steeled by this, the great minds of history set out in quest of the Undying, the Eternal, the Everlasting. They went looking for the Elysian Fields, lap up the Elixir of Life and bathe in the Fountain of Youth. Buddha called it Nirvana. Christ called it Soul. Plato put it in the form of a question and Shakepeare put it in rhyme. Ah, so innocent and naive was man in its youth... For look what we have now: Elysian Fields all gentrified with strip malls and multiplexes. The Elixir of Life comes in Tall, Grande, and Venti. The Fountain of Youth flows with Botox. And the souls of the departed go to Life Extensions...

A Maioria - Thoureau

Sério =)

Aí eu te pergunto, valerá a pena?

Now you see it, now you won't: Boeing lifts the veil on stealthy Bird of Prey

Boeing's Bird of Prey technology demonstrator, unveiled in St Louis on 18 October after spending a decade in the world of 'black' or classified programs, is a very important step in stealth technology, combining a very low radar cross-section (RCS) with a renewed focus on visual and even acoustic signatures. The overall goal, confirmed by officials at the event, is to achieve daylight stealth.

The importance of the event was underlined both by the presence of the two top US Air Force (USAF) leaders - Air Force secretary James Roche and chief of staff General John Jumper - and by the scanty information made available. On the record, officials said only that the program's purpose was to test 'specific' and 'breakthrough' stealth technologies, along with the rapid-prototyping techniques developed by the Phantom Works. The pilots who carried out the unusually slow-paced flight test program - 38 missions between late 1996 and 1999, barely more than a sortie per month - were identified, but the engineers who ran the program were not.

Boeing pilot Joe Felock made it clear that the Bird of Prey - named after a Klingon spacecraft from Star Trek - was a low-performance demonstrator, designed to put a representative shape into the air with minimum time and expense. Maximum speed was 260kt and the highest altitude achieved was 20,000ft. The 14.2kN Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5 engine would have been working hard to propel a small-winged 3,360kg aircraft even if it were not breathing through a tortuous inlet; Northrop Grumman, using the same engine on its X-47A Pegasus unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) demonstrator, has reported problems in reducing duct losses.

An unusual feature of the Bird of Prey was that it was designed with an all-manual control system, with pushrods and a mechanical mixer box linking the stick and rudder pedals to four control surfaces - elevons on the inner wings and 'rudderons' on the outer wing panels. The landing gear used modified components from Beech King Air and Queen Air aircraft.

The project formally started in 1992. The US$67 million development cost was provided by McDonnell Douglas (acquired by Boeing in 1998), but the USAF agreed to provide flight-test facilities and security, including chase aircraft and access to the secure flight-test center at Area 51 in Nevada.

The Bird of Prey would have been one of the first major Phantom Works projects. It was parallel and complementary to the X-36 unmanned tailless demonstrator. While the latter was aimed at validating technologies that McDonnell Douglas was offering for the supersonic, agile Joint Strike Fighter, the Bird of Prey clearly represents an all-out stealth approach in a vehicle with lower flight performance.

Many features of the Bird of Prey support the hypothesis that it was designed for unprecedented RCS levels: possibly an RCS of -70dBsm, or rather smaller than a mosquito.

The shape of the aircraft, too, is - accidentally or intentionally - laid out to avoid shadows. This suggests strongly that the Bird of Prey is a demonstrator for visual stealth technology.

"Lieutenant Commander Mike Brown, a spokesman on the USS Kitty Hawk carrier, said they were fired at fast-moving targets. "We had a short-notice response to engage a very limited window of opportunity for some significant military targets," he said.

Military sources have said the missiles targeted a meeting of five Iraqi officials in Baghdad. An Iraqi minister said a U.S. bid to "assassinate" Saddam Hussein had failed"

As dúvidas pipocam aqui e ali.

Magrelo: Claro!
BMF1: Legal. Quanto é a hora?
Magrelo: R$3
BMF1: O cadastro.
BMF2: Tá, e jacaré não come alpiste porra! Bora jogar!!!

É mole??? =)

Aventuras do Hamster em Curitiba

Continuando...

Cheguei pregado na rodoviária, e lá estava minha amiga Decca a me esperar. Um pulo rápido no deccamóvel e temos um hamster chapado dormindo.

Screw that junk we have here. THAT was real food.
My preciousssssss....
-Despertador-Hamster (Acordaaaaaaa... - Deep Inner joke here)

Roubado descaradamente do sinfest

On civilization. Long long ago some ape-man must have looked at his life, his existence, his family, his tribe, the world around him, and thought, "What the hell are we all doing here?" Cuz all this business with being born and growing up and procreating and surviving is, let's be honest, some pretty strange shit. And inquisitive minds want to know just where the heck it's all going. So the ape-man formed a committee and announced that we're all gonna keep this existence thing going until we figure it out, find out who's behind it all, and kick his ass. He made some rules to ensure the survival of his peeples. Don't hurt nobody. Don't kill nobody. Don't steal. And don't smoke the funny grass. And if you violate these rules, we will hurt you and kill you and steal your grass. It sounded like a good idea at the time, and the same rules survive to this very day with few modifications.

Absolutamente genial.

Title: Nightswimming
Album: Automatic For The People

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
Turned around backwards so the windshield shows.
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse.
Still, it's so much clearer.

I forgot my shirt at the water's edge.
The moon is low tonight.
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
I'm not sure all these people understand.
It's not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
Of recklessness and water.

They cannot see me naked.
These things, they go away,
Replaced by everyday.
Nightswimming, remembering that night.

September's coming soon.
I'm pining for the moon.
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?

That bright, tight forever drum
Could not describe nightswimming.
You, I thought I knew you.
You I cannot judge.
You, I thought you knew me,
This one laughing quietly underneath my breath.
Nightswimming.

The photograph reflects,
Every streetlight a reminder.
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night.
Turning Point

Bom gente, voltei.
