The annual event is in its 26th year of encouraging fun and exciting technological breakthroughs.

Toyota, the event's sponsors, encourage ideas from scientists and members of the public but not all make it into production.

One which may prove useful is the stair-climbing wheelchair, built from off-the-shelf parts, which won the competition's excellence award.

It was the hamster car, based on the look of a ladybird but powered by hamsters running on a treadmill, that amazed the judges.

The car's motor is driven by amplifying the electric power generated by the hamsters running.

It drove off with the competition's Dream Car award for school and university students.

Other prize-winners included the 'Fushigi wonder balance running car' which can move on two wheels or four and the 'Surfing Johnny' which is a surfboard on wheels.
