"U.S. Marines finally crossed the Euphrates and the Saddam Canal in Nassiriya, but soon ran into more trouble.
We're getting ambushed up there right now," said Lew Craparotta, commander of the Third Battalion, First Marine Infantry regiment, on the road north of Nassiriya."

U.N. Official: Fake Iraq Nuke Papers Were Crude
Tue March 25, 2003 09:39 AM ET
By Louis Charbonneau

VIENNA (Reuters) - A few hours and a simple internet search was all it took for U.N. inspectors to realize documents backing U.S. and British claims that Iraq had revived its nuclear program were crude fakes, a U.N. official said.

Speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, a senior official from the U.N. nuclear agency who saw the documents offered as evidence that Iraq tried to buy 500 tons of uranium from Niger, described one as so badly forged his "jaw dropped."

"When (U.N. experts) started to look at them, after a few hours of going at it with a critical eye things started to pop out," the official said, adding a more thorough investigation used up "resources, time and energy we could have devoted elsewhere."

The United States first made the allegation that Iraq had revived its nuclear program last fall when the CIA warned that Baghdad "could make a nuclear weapon within a year" if it acquired uranium. President Bush found the proof credible enough to add it to his State of the Union speech in January.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) official said the charge Iraq sought the uranium was to be the "stake in the heart" of Baghdad and "would have been as close to a smoking gun as you could get" because Iraq could only want it for weapons.

OBVIOUS FAKES

Once the IAEA got the documents -- which took months -- French nuclear scientist Jacques Bautes, head of the U.N. Iraq Nuclear Verification office, quickly saw they were fakes.

Two documents were particularly bad. The first was a letter from the president of Niger which referred to his authority under the 1965 constitution. That constitution has been defunct for nearly four years, the official said.

There were other problems with the letter, including an unsuccessful forgery of the president's signature.

"It doesn't even look close to the signature of the president. I'm not a (handwriting) expert but when I looked at it my jaw dropped," the official said.

Another letter about uranium dated October 2000 purportedly came from Niger's foreign minister and was signed by a Mr. Alle Elhadj Habibou, who has not been foreign minister since 1989.

To make matters worse, the letterhead was out of date and referred to Niger's "Supreme Military Council" from the pre-1999 era -- which would be like calling Russia the Soviet Union.

After determining the documents were fakes, the IAEA had a group of international forensics experts -- including people from the U.S and Britain -- verify their findings. The panel unanimously agreed with the IAEA.

"We don't know who did it," the official said, adding that it would be easy to come up with a long list of groups and states which would like to malign the present Iraqi regime.

The IAEA asked the U.S. and Britain if they had any other evidence backing the claim that Iraq tried to buy uranium. The answer was no.

IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei informed the U.N. Security Council in early March that the Niger proof was fake and that three months with 218 inspections at 141 sites had produced "no evidence or plausible indication" Iraq had a nuclear program.

But last week Vice President Dick Cheney repeated the U.S. position and said that ElBaradei was wrong about Iraq.

"We know (Iraqi President Saddam Hussein) has been absolutely devoted to trying to acquire nuclear weapons, and we believe he has in fact reconstituted nuclear weapons," he said.

De volta à faculdade

Yup, primeiro dia de aula hoje, cursando nove matérias. Tenho que ser louco ou o quê? *rs*.

Redneck from hell

aye, no darn sissy flyboys over my barn!

"U.S. and British aircraft bombed a Syrian civilian bus carrying Syrian workers working in Iraq on their way to Syria. This criminal act resulted in the death of five of the Syrian citizens and the injury of others," an official statement said.
An earlier report from the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said a U.S. plane had fired a missile at a bus carrying 37 Syrians, killing five and wounding at least 10.

SANA said the incident occurred on Sunday morning in Iraq's al-Rutbeh area, some 160 km (100 miles) from the Syrian border."

Sinfest - Life

Through the ages man has lamented the ephemeral nature of life. Everything dies, nothing lasts, all is subject to the ravaging force of Time. So steeled by this, the great minds of history set out in quest of the Undying, the Eternal, the Everlasting. They went looking for the Elysian Fields, lap up the Elixir of Life and bathe in the Fountain of Youth. Buddha called it Nirvana. Christ called it Soul. Plato put it in the form of a question and Shakepeare put it in rhyme. Ah, so innocent and naive was man in its youth... For look what we have now: Elysian Fields all gentrified with strip malls and multiplexes. The Elixir of Life comes in Tall, Grande, and Venti. The Fountain of Youth flows with Botox. And the souls of the departed go to Life Extensions...

A Maioria - Thoureau

Sério =)

Aí eu te pergunto, valerá a pena?

Now you see it, now you won't: Boeing lifts the veil on stealthy Bird of Prey

Boeing's Bird of Prey technology demonstrator, unveiled in St Louis on 18 October after spending a decade in the world of 'black' or classified programs, is a very important step in stealth technology, combining a very low radar cross-section (RCS) with a renewed focus on visual and even acoustic signatures. The overall goal, confirmed by officials at the event, is to achieve daylight stealth.

The importance of the event was underlined both by the presence of the two top US Air Force (USAF) leaders - Air Force secretary James Roche and chief of staff General John Jumper - and by the scanty information made available. On the record, officials said only that the program's purpose was to test 'specific' and 'breakthrough' stealth technologies, along with the rapid-prototyping techniques developed by the Phantom Works. The pilots who carried out the unusually slow-paced flight test program - 38 missions between late 1996 and 1999, barely more than a sortie per month - were identified, but the engineers who ran the program were not.

Boeing pilot Joe Felock made it clear that the Bird of Prey - named after a Klingon spacecraft from Star Trek - was a low-performance demonstrator, designed to put a representative shape into the air with minimum time and expense. Maximum speed was 260kt and the highest altitude achieved was 20,000ft. The 14.2kN Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5 engine would have been working hard to propel a small-winged 3,360kg aircraft even if it were not breathing through a tortuous inlet; Northrop Grumman, using the same engine on its X-47A Pegasus unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) demonstrator, has reported problems in reducing duct losses.

An unusual feature of the Bird of Prey was that it was designed with an all-manual control system, with pushrods and a mechanical mixer box linking the stick and rudder pedals to four control surfaces - elevons on the inner wings and 'rudderons' on the outer wing panels. The landing gear used modified components from Beech King Air and Queen Air aircraft.

The project formally started in 1992. The US$67 million development cost was provided by McDonnell Douglas (acquired by Boeing in 1998), but the USAF agreed to provide flight-test facilities and security, including chase aircraft and access to the secure flight-test center at Area 51 in Nevada.

The Bird of Prey would have been one of the first major Phantom Works projects. It was parallel and complementary to the X-36 unmanned tailless demonstrator. While the latter was aimed at validating technologies that McDonnell Douglas was offering for the supersonic, agile Joint Strike Fighter, the Bird of Prey clearly represents an all-out stealth approach in a vehicle with lower flight performance.

Many features of the Bird of Prey support the hypothesis that it was designed for unprecedented RCS levels: possibly an RCS of -70dBsm, or rather smaller than a mosquito.

The shape of the aircraft, too, is - accidentally or intentionally - laid out to avoid shadows. This suggests strongly that the Bird of Prey is a demonstrator for visual stealth technology.
